Cylinder volume calculator
Volume of a cylinder from its radius and height, or of a hollow pipe from its outer and inner radius.
Formula and worked example
Cylinder: V = π r² h
Tube (pipe): V = π (R² − r²) h
Example: a cylinder with r = 2 cm, h = 5 cm holds 62.8319 cm³ = 0.0628319 litres.
Drums, pipes, cans, round tanks lying upright, concrete columns and post holes are all cylinders.
Other solids
Need the outside area for paint or material instead? Use the surface area calculator.
Questions people ask
What is the formula for the volume of a cylinder?
V = πr²h: the area of the circular base (πr²) times the height. If you know the diameter, halve it first: r = d/2.
How many gallons are in a cylinder?
Measure radius and height in inches, compute πr²h in cubic inches, then divide by 231 (one US gallon is exactly 231 in³). The result box does this for you.
How do I find the volume of a pipe?
Choose Tube (pipe): V = π(R² − r²)h gives the volume of the material. The volume the pipe can carry is the inner cylinder, πr²h.
