Formula and worked example
Sphere: V = (4/3) π r³
Hemisphere: V = (2/3) π r³
Spherical cap: V = (1/3) π h² (3r − h)
Example: a sphere with r = 3 cm holds 113.097 cm³ = 0.113097 litres.

Questions people ask
What is the formula for the volume of a sphere?
V = (4/3)πr³. Doubling the radius multiplies the volume by 8.
How do I get the radius from the volume?
r = ∛(3V / 4π).
Why is a sphere two thirds of a cylinder?
Archimedes showed that a sphere fills exactly two thirds of the smallest cylinder that contains it (radius r, height 2r): (4/3)πr³ ÷ 2πr³ = 2/3.
